Kraków joined ICORN in 2011, becoming the first ICORN City of Refuge in Central Europe.
The ICORN programme in Kraków is coordinated through a cooperation between the City of Kraków, Kraków Festival Office, and the Villa Decius Association, where the ICORN residents are hosted. The city is also a UNESCO City of Literature.
In 2013, Kraków hosted the ICORN Network Meeting/PEN International Writers in Prison Committee Conference, under the title 'Writing Freedom' which gathered 200 participants.
Since 2011, Kraków has hosted 12 writers in ICORN residence, including Maria Amelie, Kareem Amer, Aslı Erdoğan, Kholoud Charaf, Aaiún Nin, and Ersan Perkin, amongst others.
