Visit
Finally -
unlike what hadn't been usual for him -
my darling smiled at her name.
The universe celebrated by adding two extra skies
and butterflies
wore wings
of pure freedom -
Thanks,
said the forests
as they combed their hair with the wind -
Thanks,
said the seagulls
as they shook the fatigue of those first migrations
off their wings -
Thanks, said the waves,
as they performed their dance
in an oceanic key of passion -
Wheat fields stirred
and dreams tamed the storms
and God retook his throne again
Finally,
and like what had been usual till then,
the guard's voice gurgled
making known the end of the visit
the prison grilles close her
eyes
and the walls don
a hue of deep shame

Portrait
The curse said to him be
so he was
his eyes two dirty copper buttons
his nose an exclamation point
drawn viciously
his mouth the shape of a stifled voice
and his tongue in the barrel of the gun.
On his shoulders peacocks rest
bloated with defeats
he owes debts that would
break the blood banks, engulfing them in scandal
He tends to us
with a blind heart
and guards us
with barbed wire
his intentions ensnare
and his smile heralds a massacre
his wisdom is death
and his justice hell...
Forgive me... I'll stop.
I'm about to faint
maybe he's not exactly like that
but he is...

As long as you are, I am
You can come in
without permission
and leave without permission
as long as my heart is open
and I can be your confession
as long as you are my forgiveness,
Your question,
still my answer,
Your rains...
still my lightening,
Your time...
still my place -
So do I have to apologize
if my fate is surrounded
by obscurity
and my life encircled in poetry?
* * * * *
* * * * *
* * * * *
* * * * *

Neighing
Stop... and weep...
Not sadness over the corpse of
the left overs of a cursed god
And so not a sadness
over a bird burdend with open space
Don't take me
Don't leave me
Maybe, my two friends, it's a wasteland without language
Maybe you too can postpone the inevitability of death
a little.
My cell is my body
and the ode incidental freedom
* * *
A palm tree shakes off its pollen
breaking into tears.
Who struck it,
when the lightening-herder went astray?
And who set upon me?
To rise?
The earth proceeds,
to sink?
A sky so coveted can only
be subdued.
* * *
I said this is my vision
and my exhaustion attests to it.
The river doesn't bend except
for this wager
But I, when a woman falls heavily
at the end of night, I forget my hands
on her voice, and then she departs,
leaving me my chains,
to write something, finally
but I, whenever the late birds struggle
(toward me the horizon shokes)
and an hour's mirage
I gargle it.
Oh, these two...
Give me back a little space
since my cell is a body I claim
and a freedom that claims me...
And give me back a question.
For the answers scattered by the tribes
or that scattered me over them,
no harm in that...
Look: the coming day, overflowing, will gather me
teardrop by teardrop, like an ode in its cradle,
and then illuminate me suddenly,
like a verse at its climax,
and bless me with its antithesis.
* * *
Oh sister... oh mother...
Oh, any lover...
If god saw his form
in our embraces, it would be revealed ...
But he doesn't see
other than locked doors
and shackles
And the sky stretches
under the soldiers' boots
other than a braided sky
its throne is of blood
its law acid
Is it the spirit inhales
from the trees of Dujeil,
the description and the bombardment bending them
until they send back what's been inhaled as blood
from Rabat?
That minaret - a stab in the void
That mast - its heel in dirt
that doesn't end in sky.
This is Golgotha
and blood washes the Nile
of its water,
Barada of its nightmares,
and the Euphrates.
* * *
I said this is my vision
and you, too, witness
a drop of red... two drops of red... three
And dawn breaks,
its blue doesn't stray
neighing, neighing
running its course,
making known the parting of this time.
Indeed, we're all heading toward what's to come...
They've all gone to
what's left.
So cushion me in the tenderness of my wounds
and then get up...
The child writes by the sea
at the beginning of his notebook:
And they stand, just one step,
shedding just one drop tear,
getting up.
