Meet ICORN guest writers at the 2013 Bookfair in Göteborg
Göteborg Book Fair has existed since 1985 and is the biggest meeting place for the book trade in the Nordic countries with around 1 mill. visitors each year. In 2013, the theme of the Göteborg Bookfair is Romania, and several ICORN guest writers living in Swedish cities of refuge will participate in events.
After last year’s major interest and success, ICORN, the Swedish Arts Council and the Swedish cities of refuge have once again teamed up and present a stand and a rich programme discussing the power, risk and fragility of the free word, and how to protect it. It all happens at the Art Councils stand C03:02 and Lilla Scen at Internationella Torget in H-hallen Thursday 26 – Sunday 29 September.

Thursday 26 september
11.00–11.20 Free words on the run (Art Councils stand: C03:02)
The editor Per Bergström and previous ICORN guest writer Anisur Rahman present the anthology Fria Ord på Flykt (Free words on the run).
11.30–11.50 To publish under oppression (Art Councils stand: C03:02)
The possibilities and impossibilities in publishing books in Iran. The Journalist Golnaz Esfandiari in conversation with Kerstin Brunnberg.
14.30–14.55 To write in Iran (Internationella Torget, Lilla Scen)
Iranian authorities limits freedom of expression through censuring text and imprisoning writers. Meet the journalist Golnaz Esfandiari, Washington D.C., active blogger, and three of Sweden’s ICORN guest writers from Iran: Sedigheh Vasmaghi (Uppsala), Nasrin Madani (Växjö) and Naeimeh Doostdar (Malmö).

Golnaz Esfandiari works at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, based in Washington DC. Swedish PEN runs the online journal The Dissident blog. Both channels give room for censored writers around the world. Swedish PEN’s spokesman Ola Larsmo speaks with Golnaz Esfandiari about ways to give voice to the free word.
12.00–12.20 Freedom of expression via the media, internet and culture

Journalists are imprisoned, theater managers fired, concerts cancelled, and photography set on fire. What can Sweden do? Contributory: Kerstin Brunnberg, journalist andn spokesman at the Arts Council, Johan Hallenborg, expert and Deputy Director at Foreign Ministry of Affairs Department for International Law, Human Rights and Treaty law, and Pia Hallonsten, Senior Project Manager and Advisor on freedom of expression cultural aid, Sida. In cooperation with Swedish Institute and Sida.
15.30–15.50 Hip hop from Gaza – ICORN guest writer Khaled Harara (Art Councils booth: C03:02) Göteborgs new ICORN guest writer, a free-spoken hop-hop-artist by the name of Khaled Harara, in conversation with Middle East expert Lotta Schüllerqvist.
Lørdag 28 September
11.00–11.25 Safe, but not silent: An Ethiopian voice from Stockholm (Internationella Torget, Lilla Scen)
Ethiopian journalist Mezgebu Hailu Habtewold came to Stockholm as an ICORN guest writer in 2012 due to censorship and persecution in his home country. Meet him in a conversation with ICORN Executive Director ICORN, Helge Lunde, about freedom of expression in Ethipoia and Habtewolds fight for freedom and democracy from his new safe haven in Sweden.
