Shuddhashar - from publishing house to online magazine and publication
Ahmedur Rashid Chowdhury, aka Tutul, founded the magazine Shuddhashar during his while still in university in the 90'. In the early millennium, the printed magazine would become a publishing house, highlighting the voices of young progressive and open-minded secular writers in Bangladesh. He published writers like Avijit Roy, Ananta Bijoy and many more who since have been brutally silenced by fundamentalists during the past years in Bangladesh.
A blogger and publisher of the free-thinking writers in Bangladesh, Tutul himself became one of the victims in the series of fatal assaults on secular bloggers and publishers in Bangladesh. After the attack at his office in Dakha in October 2015, which he scarcly survived, Tutul and his family settled in Skien in Norway through the ICORN programme in January 2016. He is determined to continue his work in spite of the threats, the distance from his home country and the consequences the incidents have had on his work.
Tutul launched the first edition of the online magazine, Shuddhashar, in January 2017, with Bengali e-books, and articles in both Bengali and English, featuring Bangladeshi writers and free-thinkers as well as international writers and others who speak up for freedom of expression.
The third edition of the magazine was recently published and includes an interview with ICORN Programme Director, Elisabeth Dyvik.
