Paris and Mexico City in joint action to promote ICORN
On Tuesday 27 May, the Mayors Anne Hidalgo of Paris and Miguel Angel Mancera of Mexico City, signed an extensive partnership agreement in Paris City Hall. The two cities agreed to exchange experiences on rehabilitation and renovation of their historic centres, to multiply their joint innovative initiatives to boost tourism, and to work together to further promote their work as cities of refuge for persecuted writers. Following the signature ceremony, the exhibition “Paris-Mexico, Cities of Refuge for writers in exile” was officially opened in the Paris City Library.
“This is a fantastic incident”, says ICORN director Helge Lunde. “Paris and Mexico City are dear and very competent members of the ICORN network. The new agreement is not only a sign that they will strengthen their cities’ efforts to protect and promote writers at risk. It is also a very important signal to other major cities all over the globe, that they should join the club with Paris and Mexico City, to include values of hospitality, freedom of expression and international solidarity to the core of their cities policies”.
