Meet two cosmopolitan intellectuals in a conversation about roots, freedom of expression and their own works.
Lisa Appignanesi is the chair of English PEN as well as a journalist. She has written several novels, including the prizewinning The Memory Man (2004), but also theoretical works about postmodernism, feminism and freedom of expression. Appignanesi was born in Poland and grew up in France and Canada. She now lives in England.
Ilija Trojanow was born in Bulgaria in 1965 but was forced to flee the country when he was only six. The family moved first to Germany and then Kenya. In his debut novel Die Welt ist groß und Rettung lauert überall [The World is Wide and Salvation Lurks Everywhere] (1996), Trojanow describes his family's experiences as political refugees. Among his other books are travel writings from India and the critically acclaimed novel The Collector of Worlds (2006). Trojanow has received several literary awards and been translated into several languages. He has lived in Cape Town since 2003.
