Copenhagen grants funds to establish City of Refuge

The municipality of Copenhagen has granted DKK 2 million in order to establish the Danish capitol as a City of Refuge, following Fanø, Frederiksberg, Odense and Århus as Denmark’s fifth ICORN city.

”It’s obvious that Copenhagen, known as a free and tolerant city, should be a City of Refuge. Copenhagen should play a role in ensuring that artists can express themselves without risk,” says Mayor Frank Jensen (photo).

While the other Danish Cities of Refuge are funded in a cooperation between the municipalities, the Minsitry of Cultural Affairs, and Gyldendal Publishing, Copenhagen will fund the hosting of a writer with municipal funds only. According to Mayor Jensen, the municipality hopes to become an active City of Refuge starting January 2011.
