According to the UN, violence against women and girls (VAWG) is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today and remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it.
On 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a 16 Days of Activism Campaign to end violence against women was launched by several Human Rights organisations, among them Femena, Human Rights Watch (HRW), AWID and DAWN. It is joined by a number of individual activists among them journalist and ICORN resident in Ljubljana, Shiva Nazarahari.
- Women human rights defenders in the Middle East face huge challenges. They work under difficult conditions to ensure rights and improve their societies. Many MENA governments have systematically restricted civic space & shut down organizations. this campaign wants to bring attention to increasing & systematic pressure against WHRDs in MENA.
2020 has been a deadly and violent year for Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRD) in the MENA region. The Campaign aims is to raise awareness about WHRD’s from the region, highlighting their work and the pressure they face. The Campaign runs until 10 December, the UN Human Rights Day.
