ICORN goes to Chicago

On Friday 25 and Saturday 26 April, the ICORN guest writers Manal al-Sheikh (Iraq/Stavanger) and Mazen Maarouf (Palestine/Reykjavik) will be performing in  Chicago under the title “Voices of Protest – celebrating global literature + freedom of expression”. An Al-Jazeera-produced  film on each of them will be screened during the event, and the writers will read from their works and engage in dialogue with the audience.

ICORN at Freedom of speech conference in Uppsala 12-13 February

The City of Uppsala is organising the conference Freedom of Speech – Perspective and Initiatives on 12–13 February. The conference reflects various aspects of freedom of speech and the initiatives that are taken to strengthen it. Together with key organisations working for artists right to free speech, like PEN, Freemuse and Reporters Without Borders, ICORN guest writers are invited participate in a row of debates and discussions on the conditions of freedom of expression. Among them are current guest writers, Turkish publisher, Ragip Zarakolu, and Sedigheh Vasmaghi, poet from Iran and guest writer in Uppsala.

Eritrea under UN scrutiny in Geneva – ICORN Guest writers taking part

On invitation from PEN International, Eritrean ICORN Guest Writers, Dessale Behrekhet and Haile Bizen Abrha, will be around for the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR) session on the human rights situation in Eritrea, in Geneva on 3 February. While on a daily basis fighting for human rights and freedom of expression in their home countries from their Norwegian shelter cities of Bø and Kristiansand, in Geneva the two writers will be able to attend the UN session, speak to the international press, tweet from the event, and take part in side events organised by PEN International and local partners.
