Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) releases special report: Journalists in Exile 2009

To mark the World Refugee Day on June 20, CPJ is releasing a survey on journalists in exile. Since 2001 nearly 400 journalists have been forced into exile worldwide, and more than 330 of them remain in exile today. These data closely track other press freedom indicators such as deadly violence against journalists and impunity in those attacks.
The CPJ survey counts only those journalists who fled due to work-related persecution, who remained in exile for at least three months, and whose current whereabouts and activities are known. Over the last 12 months, 39 journalists fled their home countries. The figures are down from a record 82 last year, a decline that largely reflects circumstances in Iraq where violence has ebbed. The figures are, however, consistent with annual figures over the rest of the decade. Most journalists who fled their homes in the past 12 months were driven out by violent attack or the threat of assault.
